Dear Teacher,
I wanted to share some important information about my child, _________________, who has Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). This is an autoimmune condition where the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone needed to process sugar from food.
What You Need to Know:
- It's not caused by diet or lifestyle - it's an autoimmune condition
- My child needs insulin to process carbohydrates from food
- Blood sugar levels need to be checked regularly throughout the day
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can be dangerous and needs immediate treatment
What to Watch For:
- Low blood sugar signs: Shaking, sweating, confusion, irritability, hunger
- High blood sugar signs: Excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue
- If you notice these signs: Please send my child to the school nurse immediately
What My Child May Need:
- Permission to check blood sugar in class if needed
- Access to water and bathroom without restrictions
- Snacks or juice available for low blood sugar
- Understanding if they seem "off" or not themselves
I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. My contact information is below, and I can provide additional resources if needed.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Sincerely,
